KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth. For as the churning of milk produces butter, and wringing the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife…” (Proverbs 30:32-33, the Holy Bible).

CRITICS MUST BE RAPPED FOR REBELLION, TOO, IF…: I hope martial law critics and their cohorts from the political opposition will not be saying once again that the discovery of some P74 million in cash and checks from a known terrorist lair in Marawi City, and the recovery of a video footage showing a meeting of terrorist leaders days before the city was taken over by a combined force of local and foreign rebels and invaders, are nothing but maneuvers by the Duterte government to justify its imposition of martial law in Mindanao.

If critics will still make that claim, I say all of them must be investigated, and then charged in court, not only for misleading the nation about what really is going on in Marawi City and in the whole of Mindanao, but for rebellion likewise.

This is because making an absurd claim that the Duterte government is merely maneuvering to justify martial law is in itself a way of giving aid and comfort to the enemy, which constitutes rebellion and treason of the highest order.

OPPOSITORS OF MARTIAL LAW SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES: Indeed, no Filipino in his right mind should even be thinking that the government can stoop so low as to stash P74 million in cash and checks in a house in Marawi City while fighting is on-going there, and would be manipulating a well-respected international news agency like the Associated Press to release a video of the terrorist meeting, just to justify martial law.

As former Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, my departed professor in Constitutional Law at the UP College of Law, was won’t to say to humiliate those whom she thought were nincompoops and harebrained personalities, “asus, you should be ashamed of yourself”, I wish to also say to critics of Duterte’s martial law that they should be ashamed of themselves, too.

For the truth is evident and can no longer be suppressed. The forces, local and foreign, that overrun Marawi City in May 2017 engaged in an armed and public uprising, whose objective was to remove from the allegiance to the government or its laws, the territory of the country or any part thereof, depriving the President or Congress, wholly or partially, of any of their powers or prerogatives.

REBELLION AND INVASION, BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT: Then, the participation of foreign terrorists in the siege of Marawi City also demonstrated the invasion of the country—not just of Marawi City, and not just of Mindanao—by foreign invaders, whose intention was to similarly take away from the Philippines parts of its territory and subject those parts under the sovereignty of a foreign power or entity.

The terror, mayhem, unspeakable violence, and the death and destruction which these terrorists committed in the past few days that resulted in hundreds of law enforcement authorities and of civilians being killed, coupled with the recent discoveries of the P74 million and of the video footage of the rebels’ and invaders’ meeting, all prove, beyond reasonable doubt, the existence of rebellion and invasion in our land.

Only those whose interests lie in seeing our country destroyed and subjected to a ruthless and murderous foreign power, or made to experience terrorism in the magnitude of the events that are taking place in major cities abroad, will fail or refuse to see these realities here in the Philippines at the moment. Indeed, they are traitors who should be sent to the battlefields.
