Zamboanga City joins the nationwide observance of Independence Day Monday, June 12 in fitting ceremonies to be spearheaded by the City Government with Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) Secretary Jesus Dureza as keynote speaker.

Themed ““Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-Samang Balikatin,” the commemoration of Philippine Independence Day is now on its 119th year since its proclamation on June 12, 1898. It celebrates the nation’s independence from decades of Spanish rule.

Dureza and Mayor Beng Climaco will lead the flag raising rites 7am at the Rizal Park fronting City Hall, simultaneous with all other cities and provinces in the country. Immediately after the flag raising ceremony will follow the laying of wreaths at the foot of the Rizal Monument.

Multi-sectoral groups in the city have been invited to participate in the simple yet meaningful event.

The brief program will open with Mayor Climaco’s message to be followed by Sec. Dureza’s Independence Day message. The Jambangan dance troupe will entertain the audience with a cultural performance and later join Twina Campos in a music and dance interlude.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Band will lead the signing of the national anthem and Zamboanga Hermosa hymn.

Zamboanga City is one of the key cities where the commemorative rites will be led by national government officials including senators. The other areas are Kawit, Cavite; Malolos, Bulacan; Angeles City, Pampanga; Calamba, Laguna; Davao City; Baguio City and Ilo-ilo City.

President Duterte will lead the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites at the Rizal Park in Manila and later hold the traditional morning reception or Vin d’Honneur for the diplomatic corps at Malacañang Palace.  (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
