All roads lead to Talon-Talon covered court tomorrow  for the much awaited Zamboanga Mindanao Aguilas Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament Championship.

The championship games will be played between the power house and star studded Tumaga Mudz and the never say die Guiwan Hashim in the senior category, and Talon-Talon versus Recodo in the junior division.

At least P20,000 and P10,000 await the champion team in the senior and junior categories, respectively.

Zamboangueno Sportsman Rolando “Junnie Navarro, Tournament Organizer, said that at least 16 teams from Zamboanga city barangays have competed in the tournament.  He attributed the big number of participants to barangay chairmen supportive of their Sports programs.

Navarro identified the barangays which have joined the basketball tournament as the following:    Tumaga, Ayala, Sta. Maria,, Baliwasan, San Jose Gusu, Upper Calarin, Talon-Talon, Tetuan, Mampang, Lunzuran, Bolan, Culianan, Guiwan, Divisoria, Guiwan Jortz, Talon-Talon Kusug Tausug, Arena Blanco and Zambowood.

“We are deeply grateful to the barangay officials and their respective teams from the barangay for really supporting this inter-barangay tournament. Aside from barangay officials basketball players and their managers in the barangay level have also exerted effort to make this tourney a successful one,” Navarro told reporters in an interview.

Navarro, who also played for the Zamboanga Amores in the Liga Pilipinas, said that the tournament got a rousing start with huge crowds everytime a host team played in their host barangay.

This is one way of giving the people in the barangay especially the basketball aficionados to enjoy and be able to witness the players of their barangay play against other players right in their own barangay covered court. And by this we are surely encouraging the youth to get actively involved in sports competition especially basketball,” he added.

Navarro said that every time a host team plays a game there are always a huge crowd coming from their barangay and neighboring ones.

“Much credit goes to the managers, barangay officials who really showed passion and commitment to their team by giving their all-out support on all their games, be it at home court or on the road,”   Navarro stressed.

The championship games at Talon-Talon tomorrow will conclude the tournament that lasted more than a month and a half.

Aside from cash prizes, the champions and winners will also receive trophies from District II Councilor Lilibeth Nuño and former District II Representative Lilia Nuño.

Navarro vowed to conduct the inter-barangay basketball tournament next summer as he expressed optimism that many officials both in the government and private sectors have committed to support the said sports event in the future.

Meanwhile, it can be noted that Zamboanga City has already produced national basketball stars like Gino Jumaoas, Mark Barroca and many others.—(Jemuel E. Mojica)
