Alson’s Power Group of Companies will provide scholarships to five Zamboanguenio weightlifters under the program of Olympic Champion Hidilyn Diaz.

The grant was embodied in a Memorandum of Agreement entered into by San Ramon Power inc and Western Mindanao Power Corporation represented by Executive Vice President Tirso Santillan Jr. and Philippine Weightlifting Association Inc Vice President Elbert Atilano Jr., Mr Allan Jayfrus Diaz, Coach at the Weightlifters Training Center in Mampang; and Hidilyn Diaz.

The MOA was signed at Alson Power Corporation’s main office in Makati city last June 13.

The grant was based on Diaz’s request to create programs for aspiring weightlifters to pursue their aspirations to become Olympians.

“The Program” was created in recognition of Hidilyn Diaz’s dedication and commitment to bring glory to our country through her expressed desire to select and train aspiring competitive weightlifters in a training facility in Zamboanga city, according to Alson’s officials.

The recommendation and criteria for choosing program beneficiaries came from Diaz herself, the incumbent Coach of the Philippine Weightlifting team who also operates a weightlifting training centre, and National Weightlifting Association Vice President Elbert Atilano.

The scholars who will be qualified and selected shall remain with the program for as long as they satisfy the set of conditions.

Scholars must continue to be active trainees in good standing with the Hidilyn Diaz training program in Zamboanga city and remain active members of the National Weightlifting team.

In an interview with RMN, Atilano described the program as a realization of his dream to aspire more and raise more Olympian weightlifters from Zamboanga city.

“I am getting emotional, At first, nobody believed that we can reach our dream with Hidilyn Diaz in the Rio Olympics.  We are glad Alsons Company believed in us and supported us all the way,”  Atilano said. (Bhong Simbajon)
