A total of 96 bags of blood were collected during the observance of World Blood Donors Day at the covered court of Culianan barangay hall last Tuesday.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Blood Bank and the Zamboanga City Medical Center collected  37 and 59 bags of blood, respectively.

Blood donors consisted of Culianan residents, teachers, police, students and supporters of the program from other areas.

“We have to instill in the minds of the public that it’s a social obligation for blood donors to continuously donate blood.  Especially with the peace and order situation, we need to have enough supply of blood,” said Joseline Fernandez, PRC OIC Chapter Administrator.

Fernandez said that those who are unable to donate blood can still help by recruiting blood donors.

The blood letting activity also includes a poster making contest.

Meanwhile, Fernandez said that the number of collected blood units has been increasing over the years.  She however stressed the need for more blood donors.

This year, PRC was able to collect 11,000 units of blood, an increase of 2,000 units compared to previous years.

The PRC and the Zamboanga City Medical Center are the only authorized blood banks in Zamboanga city.  (RGAAGo)
