First District Congressman Celso Lobregat has criticized an order by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar to close the whole stretch of the bypass road at nighttime as a deterrent to road accidents.

In an interview with RMN Zamboanga, Lobregat said that the closure of the bypass road will not resolve the problem and instead invite ire from affected residents.

“Necessita ba cerra el camino por causa del accidente?  Quiere decir, cada vez tiene accidente na maga camino, manda kita cerra?” Lobregat asked.

The recommendation to close the bypass road came after 21 passengers of a fish truck were injured while travelling along the bypass road last Sunday night.

Lobregat linked the order to another incident last March involving a City Hall security vehicle which figured in an accident while traversing the Lunzuran portion of the road during daytime.

“Porque, aquel tiempo ba ya accidenta el vehiculo del govierno local na bypass road denoche ba?  Hende ba de dia quel ya susede?”  Lobregat added.

The solon said that the bypass road is currently contributing solutions to traffic congestion for motorists who use the still uncompleted project as an alternative route.

“Many people coming from the east and west coasts have been passing by that road for a time now because they can come out in interconnecting barangay roads of Boalan, Lumbangan, Lunzuran, Tumaga and Pasonanca as access points,”  Lobregat said. (Dexter Yap)
