Suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) have raided the remote village of Barangay Malagakit in Pigcawayan North Cotabato at dawn yesterday.

A five-hour encounter followed the attack after villagers reported the incident to militiamen and troops under the 34th Infantry Battalion.

RMN Cotabato reported that around 100 families have been evacuated from the area towards barangay Poblacion.

There are still five families reportedly trapped within the encounter site as of press time.

Pigcawayan Mayor Jun Verceza told RMN Cotabato that the city government has already received intelligence reports about the impending attack by the BIFF in the area.

The report prompted the Mayor to call a Peace and Order Council meeting last Tuesday.

He described the attack as a diversionary tactic by lawless elements to divert attention from the ongoing skirmishes in Marawi city.

Meanwhile Verceza also belied reports of hostage taking of students in barangay Malagakit.

One Cafgu member was wounded in the firefight.  Reinforcement troops have been dispatched to the area.  (Bhong Simbajon)
