The Darul Ifta, the Council of Ulama of the city thru Ustadz Wahid Amil is informing the Muslim communities of Zamboanga City and its environs that on June 24 this year will be the Moon-Sighting religious activities which will determine the conclusion of the Holy Month of Ramadan Fasting in accordance with Islamic Traditions.

The joyful news was relayed thru Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, President of the Golden Crescent Consortium of Peace Builders and Affiliates of which Ustadz Wahid Amil is currently the Religious Adviser of the organization.

After the three Grand Iftars offered by important personalities in the city, namely:

-June 10, 2017/15 Ramadan 1438 A.H.—The 18th Ifar was offered by the Interreligious Solidarity for Peace (ISP) and Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) headed by Fr. Angel C. Calvo, CMF at Campo Muslim-Rio Hondo in partnership with the Rio Hondo Barangay Council and Islamic Institute of the Philippines (IIP).

-June 15, 2017/20 Ramadan 1438 A.H.—Iftar was offered by the City Government headed by Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar at Centro Latino.

-June 19, 2017/24 Ramadan 1438 A.H.—14th Iftar was offered by Congressman Celso L. Lobregat at Garden Orchid Hotel, all in this city.

Muslim observers have noted with deep appreciation to the Christian leaders of the sincere solidarity with them (Muslims) in this Holiest Month of Islam.

Prof. Yacub also said with pride that it’s only in this City of Interfaith these gestures of brotherhood are taking place unlike anywhere in this country.

“Zamboangueños must take pride in our unity and solidarity that with God’s blessings this will endure for a long time to come,” Prof. Yacub enthused.

Muslims from the following communities are expected to converge in their respective Mosques for the morning Eid Prayer, namely: Taluksangay, Rio Hondo, Recodo, Mariki and Simariki, Talon-Talon, Kasanyangan, Sta. Barbara, and the island barangays or villages of the city.

The Moon-Sighting on June 24 sets the tone of the celebration of Eid, according to Prof. Yacub, thus, if by June 24, on the late afternoon or dusk the crescent moon maybe sighted, then the Eid Prayers will commence in all Mosques on Sunday, June 25, however, if the committee task to seek the tip of the new moon fail to see it (the moon) with their naked eye, then Eid Prayers will be June 26, already declared as a national holiday by the President of the Philippines, Prof. Yacub said.

Prof. Yacub enjoins his fellow Muslims to pray for our city’s protection, and those who are still suffering due to the siege in Marawi.—(Albert F. Arcilla, GCCPBA Media Section/PR)
