The Office of Civil Defense has given its approval to a plan by the city government to designate barangay Cabatangan as evacuation area.

This as the city plans to construct the P33.5-million evacuation center in the area.

OCD-9 Assistant Regional Director Emilia Vasquez - Julhajan said that the area is applicable as an evacuation area, based on an assessment made by the OCD, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Department of Public Works and Highways, and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

“The evacuation site should be safe from all types of hazards, dapat hindi bahain pag umulan at hindi malalalandslide,”  Julhajan said.

The standard evacuation center must include an office, an area where to place evacuees, a community kitchen, a water area, sufficient rest rooms and an area where to place evacuated animals.

The center should also be able to provide needs of both evacuees and responders.

Julhajan said that the city of Zamboanga needs at least three evacuation centers.  (RGAAGo)
