A total of 6 persons have died from poisoning in the year 2016, based on health statistics.

Dr. Aeesha Yahcob Pingli, Zamboanga City Medical Center Clinical Toxicologist said that the six are among 68 people who sought treatment from the hospital’s Poison Center last year.

Cases of poisoning include the following:  Alcohol intoxication and withdrawal- 21 cases; snake bites-8; solar battery solution-1; Zonrox ingestion- 3; kerosene- 2; methamphetamine-2; zinc phosphate- 2; scorpion bite-2; and others.

These reported accidental and intentional poisoning do not choose any age group as victims are composed of children and adults.

“We have to poison proof our homes. Kung ano ang lason, meron i-account, check at lock it.  Keep these away from children.  Sa bahay pa lang we have to prevent poisoning,” Pingli said.

The doctor advised against giving oil, coconut milk, and water to the victim.  She instead advised to rush the patient to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

If possible also try to bring a sample of what the patient ingested to help physicians in the treatment.

Pingli gave the advice in line with the DOH campaign on poison prevention during Poison Prevention Week from June 19 to 25.

The theme for this year is “Bahay Kubo, Kahit Munti, Mga Lason Doon ay Sari Sari.”  (RGAAGo)
