Less than a month after the rescue of a Vietnamese sailor, two of his companions were decapitated by the Abu Sayyaf in Sumisip Basilan yesterday morning.

Western Mindanao Command Spokesperson Capt Jo-Ann Petinglay identified the two victims as Hoang Thong and Hoang Va Hai, crew members of the MV Royal 16.

Petinglay said that the decapitated cadavers were found in barangay Tumahubong in Sumisip at around 5:40 Wednesday morning.

The bodies were made to undergo forensic examinations in coordination with the Vietnamese embassy.

The two victims were among six crew members of the MV Royal 16 who were abducted by the Abu Sayyaf off the seawaters of Sibago Island in Basilan last November 11.

One of the victims, Hoang Vo, was rescued by Joint Task Force Basilan troops within the vicinity of Sitio Kumonal, Sampinit Complex in Sumisip during the height of military operations last June 16.

Three other kidnap victims, identified as Pham Minh Tuan,, Do Trung Hieu, and Tran Khac Dung are the subject of rescue operations by the military.

“We grieve as we strongly condemn the barbaric beheading of another kidnap victims in Basilan Province.  For months now, many sectors in the society, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the PNP exhausted all efforts to rescue these kidnap victims who are still in the hands of the ASG,” said Lt Gen Carlito Galvez Jr, Western Mindanao Commander, in a statement.

“Westmincom commiserates with the bereaved family and friends of the slain victims.  In no way does the Abu SAyyaf group represent our Muslim brothers who are true followers of Islam,” Galvez said.  (Liza Jocson)
