New People’s Army (NPA) members set fire to several construction equipment owned by a Congressional Representative in what appeared to be an act of retaliation for a failed case of extortion, in Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur last Sunday.

A police report said that the incident happened at around 8:30pm inside the Ramona Construction site compound owned by Congressman Victor Yu, located in Purok 1 Barangay Licabang.

The report said that around 15 alleged members of the NPA appeared at the construction site that evening, pointed their guns towards the workers and identified themselves as members of the NPA.

The NPA members then set fire to several trucks and heavy equipment in the area.

They later explained the incident as an act of retaliation to the business owner and management for not having given in to their demand.

Fire investigators estimated the damage to be P3-million.

Police and military personnel have conducted hot pursuit operations against the suspects.  (Dan Toribio)
