A giant fish, identified as sunfish by Fisheries officials, was recovered off shore in Sangbay Island in Hadji Mutamad town in Basilan yesterday.

According to reports, a group of fishermen onboard a banca were on their way to Isabela city when they saw the carcass of the fish floating on the water.

A fisherman said that the big fish could have died because of old age as they did not see any contusion nor injury on its body.

BFAR estimates the sunfish to weigh approximately 300 kilos.  The body was measured to be 13 feet long.

This is the first time that a sunfish was recovered in seas off Basilan province. (Richard Falcatan)
