Police are conducting an examination on a cadaver found in an encounter site in Sulu province last week.

The body is believed to belong to a kidnap victim who was caught in the crossfire during an encounter between government forces and the Abu Sayyaf in Patikul town.

The body, believed to be a Vietnamese kidnap victim, was recovered in Buhanginan, Patikul Sulu last July 8.

Western Mindanao Command Spokesperson Capt Joann Petinglay said that Joint Task Force Sulu turned over the body to the PNP’s Anti Kidnapping Group last July 10 after nobody from Sulu claimed the cadaver.

As of press time, there was no confirmation from AFP or PNP sources that the body belongs to Tran Khac Dung, a Vietnamese crew member of the MV Royal 16 who was kidnapped along with five other crewmen off Sibago Island last November.

Meanwhile, a foreign news agency website, the Radio Free Asia, reports a third Vietnamese Sailor killed during a firefight between Islamic militants and Filipino troops over the weekend.

The death of a Vietnames sailor, identified as Tran Viet Van was said to have been confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Liza Jocson)
