The Zamboanga city government has discouraged sending workers to “risky” areas following the kidnapping of four Zamboanguenio construction workers last Sunday.

“The city will advise residents to refrain from taking lucrative job opportunities in areas very risky,” said Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar during her weekly press briefing last Monday.

Climaco said that this is not the first incident of violence concerning construction workers, recalling that she already attended a funeral of a construction worker who was decapitated by his captors in Sulu province.

She said that she has already written the Los Contratistas, an organization of Zamboanga-based contractors, to help provide jobs to local construction workers to discourage them from working outside the city.

For his part, City Legal Officer (Ret) Judge Jesus Carbon said that the city can only advise residents not to work in risky areas but cannot compel them to do so as it will be violating a constitutional provision on freedom of abode. (Liza Jocson)
