Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday afternoon cited a Korean Foundation for the various projects it undertakes intended to assist and support persons challenged with leprosy in a community in Pasobolong.

Sorok Uni Foundation, Inc. (SUFI), a Korean-based group has constructed various infrastructure projects such as comfort rooms and a center now called the SOROK Mindanao Central Sanitarium (MCS) center— which were inaugurated yesterday afternoon.

“Your contributions are indeed noteworthy and are reflective of your cause as an organization with the noble vision of helping people whose lives were challenged by leprosy or Hansen’s disease”, the mayor said in his message during a program after the inauguration rites.

The mayor was invited by SUFI to grace the inauguration of the projects, an activity which the chief executive described to be borne out of service and humanitarian care.

For years, he said the SUFI has been providing shelters to the abandoned, facilitating the education of their children, and creating livelihood opportunities for them to start a new life.

Leprosy or Hansen’s disease (HD) is a chronic disease caused by bacteria however, the mayor stressed, what makes it damaging to people’s life is the stigma that goes with it. “The disease is definitely curable however the insensitive perception of the society towards the persons affected by leprosy is more hurtful and injurious than the disease itself”.

The mayor in his message added: “This afternoon, thru the SUFI, we witness a tangible gesture of love and concern for our brothers and sisters who are challenged by leprosy.”

Present during the inauguration rites were Councilors Rudy Lim and Joana Mas, Grace Diu of the Korean International Cooperative Agency, SUFI officials, Mr. Vic Pabellon, Pasobolong chairman Rommel Francisco and several others. — Sheila Covarrubias
