Millions of pesos worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes were destroyed by the Bureau of Customs yesterday in Salaan.

The boxes of cigarettes, a total of 1,185, were confiscated by the Bureau of Customs in coordination with law enforcement agencies in different anti-smuggling operations.

Bureau of Customs District Collector Atty Halleck Valdez said that the imported cigarettes, considered as a restricted item, were not supported by the requisite documents on importation.

The boxes were said to be kept for a long time at the Customs warehouse and were said to be abandoned, prompting the issuance of Abandonment and Condemnation orders.

Each box of cigarette is estimated to cost P8,000 placing the total haul to at least P8-million.

Valdez warned importers to secure the necessary papers prior to importing restricted items to prevent the confiscation of their products.  (Ely Dumaboc)
