The Philippine Coast Guard will prohibit the use of finger or private wharves and ports in the city to embark or disembark passengers as part of its stepped up security campaign effective Sunday, July 30.

In a message to Mayor Beng Climaco, the PCG commander said with the order, all sea transportation operations will be exclusively done at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) area only.

Dialogues have been conducted by the Coast Guard Station-Zamboanga with all stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the directive starting Sunday.

“In order to better effect control and inspection of people entering/ leaving Zamboanga City in support of the security program of the City Government, I issued orders that effective tomorrow, all finger/private ports are no longer allowed to embark or disembark passengers,” the PCG commander informed Mayor Climaco in a text message.

Recall that almost a hundred private wharves or ports have been reported to be operating in the city.

Mayor Climaco has called for the dismantling of these ports, most of which are illegally operating to help curb criminality and other forms of lawlessness. (Sheila Covarrubias)
