Around 1,000 families were rendered homeless when a fire struck an island in Basilan province yesterday morning.

A Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) report said that the fire incident happened in barangay Diki in Malamawi Island Basilan province at around 10am Sunday.

Basilan Fire Marshall Jasmine Tanog said that the fire started from one of the houses in barangay Diki and spread to adjacent structures.

Residents themselves alternately saved their belongings and helped put out the blaze themselves using pails of water.

The Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine Coast Guard said that it was difficult to put out the blaze because the island does not have a fire truck.

The BFP declared fire under control at around noontime.

Based on records of the social welfare office 1,000 familie were rendered homeless by the fire.

BFP personnel are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

One of the residents however said that the fire originated from a television set that overheated. (Richard Falcatan, with reports from Dan Toribio)
