Zamboanga has long been known for its moniker as the country’s “City of Flowers,” owing to the ornamental flowers mostly bougainvillea of different colors and varieties that adorned most of the traditional homes then. Years later, however, the bougainvillea followers have gradually frittered away.

Thus, the city government stands supportive of an initiative by the Department of Tourism regional office 9 to re-bloom Zamboanga City in line with Mayor Beng Climaco’s promotional campaign dubbed “I Love Zamboanga”.

In a letter to the city mayor, Tourism Regional Director Antonio Fernando M. Blanco announced his office’s component activity to promote the involvement of Zamboangueños for the project “Mi Ciudad: Limpio Y Floriao.”

He said the project calls for residents of Zamboanga to plant, grow and generate pots of bougainvillea for use in reblooming Zamboanga.

Blanco said his office will be coming out with a video to encourage compoblanos de Zamboanga to donate at least one pot of flower bougainvillea as an expression of their love for the city.

To add premium on the campaign, the video will feature Mayor Climaco herself being the staunched advocate of “I Love Zamboanga.” It will be uploaded to DOT9 Facebook Page and will also be used as in office and TV stations to solicit for donations of bougainvillea.

Blanco further said the desired response is for everyone to make his/her own personalized heart tags bearing the same inscription, take a selfie with the tag and bougainvillea for donation and upload selfie photo on DOT9 FB Page.

“With the video, we hope to touch the heart of everyone and make “Me Ciudad: Limpio Y Floria’ a personal commitment,” the DOT9 regional director said in a letter dated Aug. 1 to the mayor.

For a start, he said all DOT9 personnel have committed to donate one pot of bougainvillea for the project, hoping other employees will do the same.-(Vic Larato)
