The City Council passed  on first reading an ordinance which will provide scholarships to aspiring medical practitioners while committing them to work for the city for a certain period.

Entitled the Medical Scholarship Ordinance, the measure aims to provide more medical practitioners that will continuously be of service to the city.

The proposed ordinance aims to pay for the educational costs of scholars ranging from tuition fees to expenses for board examination and field specialization.

After graduation, scholars will have to serve in Zamboanga city through the local government.

Under the present proposal, beneficiaries will have to serve the city for two years for every year spent as a scholar.  They will be assigned to rural areas, health centers or the City Health Office.

Targeted beneficiaries include students enrolled in medicine and allied professions such as x-ray technology, respiratory therapy and others.

First District Councilor Rudy Lim, author of the ordinance, said that the amount of P5-million will serve as initial funding for the scholarship program for 5 students taking up medicine and another 10 students taking up allied medical courses.

Funding for the program may be taken from the city’s general fund, the City Health Office budget or from the budget of the City Mayor’s office.

“Si puede kita coneste hace poco poco, el ciudad de Zamboanga asigurao tiene ya doctor na maga health centers pati puede ya kita compra equipo pone na health centers like x-ray y laboratory cay tiene ya gente quien man-man cunese,” explained Lim.

The proposed ordinance was already passed on to the Committee on Ordinances and Resolutions and the Committee on Health.  A public hearing will be scheduled soon.

Lim said that the program will be open to registered voters of the city who will qualify for the medical preparatory course and pass the requisite examinations.

The City Health Officer will be tasked to form a screening committee to recommend qualified applicants to the City Mayor. (RGAAGo)
