The World Bank has allocated funds amounting to P33-M to assist cacao farmers in Zamboanga del Norte.

The funds will be channeled through Zamboanga del Norte’s Rural Development Project in coordination with the Department of Agriculture, the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Government and farmers’ cooperatives in the province.

Zamboanga del Norte has established a cacao nursery project in the year 2013.

The cacao nursery has contributed to the development of the cacao industry in the province.

The funds were donated amid reports of a possible shortage of cacao beans by approximately 1,000 metric tons in the world market by the year 2020.

This after Asian countries in Indonesia and Malaysia reportedly shifted to palm oil production. (Allen Abastillas)
