A total of 208 inmates at the direly congested Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) are suffering from Tuberculosis.

Seven more cases were described as multi-drug resistant.

April Roanne Nono, ZCRC Community Relations Service Officer said that the affected inmates are now undergoing treatment after a sputum test confirmed the infection.

Nono, who described the situation as alarming, said that jail officials have become more strict in enforcing good hygiene practices among inmates.

“El maga positive ta usa mask y tan monitor kame el medication,” said Nono, adding that affected inmates were also isolated to prevent passing on the disease to other inmates.

The number of affected inmates reportedly decreased based on initial test results conducted last March.

A total of 384 inmates were reportedly positive for Tuberculosis based on x-ray procedures conducted during the World TB Day last March.

Nono said that the jail has four nurses who are currently looking after the health of their inmates.  A volunteer doctor also comes in every Sunday for consultation.  (RGAAGo)
