Zamboanga city will be treated to back-to-back boxing and basketball events in the month of October.

The first is the Golpe de Zamboangueño, a much anticipated boxing event which features talented and potential world class local boxers in professional bouts against other Filipino fighters.

Residents will also be treated to the First Zamboanga Invitational Basketball Tournament, dubbed as the 1st Panalya Cup, where basketball teams coming from different parts of the country will be participating.

Golpe de Zamboangueño is scheduled on October 7 at the City Coliseum while the basketball tournament is set from October 2 to 8 at the Golden Boys Gym.

Junnie Navarro, known Zamboangueño sportsman, said that this is the first time that Zamboanga city will experience two sporting events within a month’s time.

“Definitely, these two sports events are a must-see show and we guarantee the local boxing and basketball fans of intense action, “ Navarro, who was also a professional basketball player, told DZT in an interview.

In the boxing event, former Mindanao featherweight champion Anthony Marcial, Matthew Arcillias and Jestoni Autida will fight against ranking Filipino boxers coming from Manila.

Arcillias, a promising local brawler, is now currently undergoing training at the Manny Pacquiao gym in Davao city under coach Nonoy Neri.

Navarro said that aside from professional boxing bouts, they will also feature a mixed martial arts ( MMA) fight.

“MMA pro fighter Arvin Chan, who was a former basketball star player now turned URCC fighter, will also treat us with an action-packed fight when he brawl it out with a fellow MMA fighter from Manila,” Navaro assured.

This will be the first time that a mixed martial arts or MMA bout will be held in this city, according to Navarro.

In the 1st Panalay Cup, local teams like BRT, MM LOZANO, ALFRAZAN, MUDZ, AYALA DZL, will definitely not be undone when them played it out with  teams from MP Gensan, Pagadian , Cebu and Manila.  (Jemuel Mojica)
