Lamitan city officials have proposed the construction of their own airport and agro-industrial zone, plans of which have recently been submitted for consideration by the national government.

The plans were the subject of City Council Resolution 2017 which were forwarded to President Rodrigo Duterte and Lower House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

Lamitan Vice Mayor Roderick Furigay said that the proposed sites for the projects are the coastal barangays of Buhaan, Maloong Canal and Calugusan.

The three barangays have a combined land area of 36,000 hectares for the airport and economic zone projects.

The proposed area can house the Agro-Industrial Zone, an airport terminal, a two kilometer runway, a communication tower and ohter buildings, according to Furigay.

The projects are expected to cost P250-million.

The proposed sites are reportedly required by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority for the establishment of an Agro-Industrial Economic Zone in the area.  (Allen Abastillas)
