Barangay San Roque is planning to turn water lilies from its Bog Lake Recreation Park into cash by using them as raw materials for personal and household products.

Joselito Macrohon, San Roque Barangay Captain, said that the water lilies can be used as raw materials to produce bags, slippers and baskets.

Trainors from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Manila were invited to come to Zamboanga to teach the skill for one week.

Around 50 residents composed of out of school youths, mothers, purok leaders and others, will be trained on how to convert the water lilies into raw materials.

Macrohon said they thought of the idea since the water lilies  which are polluting the lake are readily available in the barangay.

Bog lake is reportedly becoming smaller due to the volume of water lilies covering the lake.

“Manada water lily na Bog Lake na San Roque y alla liability le so quiere kame cun aquel kita pero sayang si buta lang.  El quiere kame, from liability hace cunele materials,” Macrohon explained. (RGAAGo)
