The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVET) has warned residents against contact with contaminated migratory birds when migration season starts next month.

The advisory was given by Dr. Arnedo Agbayani, Assistant City Veterinarian, who said that migratory birds are expected to arrive in Zamboanga starting this September.

The migratory period will be from September up to March next year.

“We have to avoid contact with migratory birds,” Agbayani said, in relation to the office’s campaign to guard the city against the entry of Avian Flu.

Agbayani admits that they have no control over migratory birds and has thus warned residents not to be in contact with such.

Agbayani however said that residents should not be too concerned about the swallows that are normally seen coming in droves every afternoon at the town proper.

“Swallows are resident birds, they are already part of Zamboanga.  They are not migratory birds,” Agbayani explained, adding “El sucio lang maka-miedo.”  (Liza Jocson)
