Congressman Celso Lobregat is urging the Department of Education (DEPED) in Zamboaga City to pursue the implementation of Sports Track category in the Junior and Senior high school education in Zamboanga City.

Lobregat said that this aspect should be pursued by te Zamboanga City Schools Division due to the diminishing performance of athletes from public elementary and secondary schools participating in various regional and national sports events.

DepEd has various tracks in academic, health and sports among others in which it is only not that attractive to student athletes.

“We have our oval in Don Pablo Lorenzo, we also have a gymnasium, and we also produced good MAPE teachers, you (DEPED) should really push for the sports track,” Lobregat said.

Congressman Lobregat said that since there is no school in Zamboanga city that offers sports track, then it’s high time for the sports division to  move double time and study the establishment of one in the Don Pablo Memorial Senior High Stand Alone.

“Antes pirmi kita No.1 na mga sports competition on the region, pero aura segundo ya lang kita. We have to bring the title back to Zamboanga, and one way to do that is to have a senior high school that offers a sports track,”Lobregat said.

In view of this, Lobregat posted the challenge to Schools Division Superintendent Felix Romy Triambulo, DPLMHS principal, Dr.Socorro Canaya and Senior High principal III Edwin Tadeo to work on the realization of such education program so they can push having a sport track in their school.

Meanwhile, SDS Triambulo said that it is a challenge to stengthen among others, the sports development program to compete with Zamboanga del Sur who have their own Sports Academy who always excel in regional sports competition.

“We always end up in 2nd place. Maybe we have left what we have done before,” Triambulo said.

The DepEd official said that around Region IX, Zamboanga City has the facilities and the capability of working on that.

Triambulo said that it will have to be a challenge for us to lead in sports. We have to review our performances for the last 5 years and hit our targets, upgrade the sports facilities so we can develop our talents.

“I am confident that with the support of Congressman Lobregat in the field of sports and education, we can make it to No. 1 again,” Triambulo said. (Dexter Yap/PR)
