Four farmers were buried alive after a portion of a hill collapsed and covered them while they were sleeping inside their hut in barangay Penaranda, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay on Tuesday morning.

Police Regional Information Officer, Chief Insp. Helen Galvez identified the fatalities as Jeffery Lamparas, Sannylito Tuquib, 21, Danilo Balicoco, 53, and Adrian Ledesma, 30, all single and residents of Purok 5, barangay Tigbangagan, Kabassalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Three others survived after they were able to run away during the incident.

PO1 Dalthon Jay Cane told Daily Zamboanga Times in an exclusive interview that the seven farmers were cleaning the area to plant vegetables and at the same time, staying in that place.

At around 5:00 a.m. of Tuesday amid the heavy downpour, the three farmers woke up while the four others were still sleeping.

A couple of seconds later, the three noticed that a portion of the hill near their hut was collapsing that prompted them to run out leaving the four who were still sleeping.

Cane said the four cadavers were retrieved and were taken to a funeral parlor for post mortem examination. – Dan Toribio
