An alleged arsonist was hacked to death by a 71-year-old man in San Miguel, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte last Friday night.

Police identified the fatality as Nono Calasang Acopio, of Dapitan City.

Initial investigation showed that at around 10:00 p.m., Nerio Bael, 71, widow, was inside their house and was about to sleep when somebody from outside threw a lighted kerosene lamp in the house.

Then Bael heard two gun fires and saw two men wearing bonnets, armed with a handgun standing at the door of their house.

At this point, Bael grabbed a bolo and attacked the two men.

Amid the commotion, Bael’s daughter Remie Engad, 30, arrived and tried to pacify the incident.

But the suspects also attacked Remie that prompted Bael to hack one of the suspects.

The bonnet of the wounded suspect was removed and he was taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

He was later identified as a certain Acopio.

Bael was placed under police custody for investigation.

Investigators recovered at the scene a 25-inch long bolo, a flash light, cellphone, scabbard, firearm pouch, sling bag color green, one live ammunition of a .45 caliber pistol and a traveling bag. – Dan Toribio
