The City Fire Department has reported a 73 percent decrease in fire incidents in Zamboanga City from January to August this year as compared to the whole year of 2016.

Citing statistics, City Fire Marshall FCI Clint Cha said 74 fire incidents were reported from January to August this year as compared to the 285 fire incidents reported from January to December of 2016.

Of the total 74 cases reported this year, 56 were structural fires and 18 were non-structural fire incidents with a total damage to property at P177.32 million.

On the other hand, of the total 285 fire cases reported last year, 125 were structural fires and 160 were non-structural fires as a result of the series of grass fires in various barangays due to the prolonged drought. Damage to properties last year amounted to P74.6M.

Nonetheless, Cha said the City Fire Department continues with its fire prevention and control campaigns stressing that prevention is the best measure to avoid loss of lives and properties.

In most of the fire incidents, including the one in Nazareth Drive, San Jose last week, the causes were electrical overloading. (Sheila Covarrubias/PR)
