Good news to all Zamboagueños who love combat sports.

All is set for the much anticipated “Kebrahan na Zamboanga”, a mixed martial arts sporting event, which will be held for the first time in Zamboanga City, and the Golpe De Zamboagueño, a series of exciting and action-packed amateur and professional matches, which both will be held on October 8, 2017 at the City Coliseum.

Noted Zamboangueño sportsman Rolando Junnie Navarro Jr. said that the Kebrahan na Zamboanga features Arvin Chan, a highly rated URCC fighter against a veteran mixed martial artist Paulo Almendrala of Australia. Chan, a professional basketball player turned mixed martial artist, has 12 professional bouts in the URCC with eight wins while the Australian fighter is a known knock out fighter with more than 10 wins.

“This is the very first time that our local folks will have the opportunity to watch an MMA fight in Zamboanga City. We also guarantee an action-packed fight between our local fighter and the Australian fighter,” Navarro told DZT in an interview.

He added that Chan vowed to showcase his MMA prowess to his fellow Zamboagueños when he meets the Australian fighter in the cage as the former predicted a knock out of the Australian or a referee stoppage of the fight.

“Both of these fighters are known for their aggressiveness and endurance. In their past respective bouts they displayed splendid boxing skills, jujitsu and wrestling,” Navarro stressed.

Chan, who grew up and studied in Zamboanga City, was also prominent in the city since he was a varsity athlete in high school.

“Chan has many fans during his basketball years here in the city”, Navarro added.

Meanwhile, the Golpe De Zamboangueño, will showcase local and promising amateur and professional boxers like former WBA Bantamweight Champion Jestoni Autida and Matthew Arcillas. Arcillas, who is an aggressive and heavy brawler, has just had a recent win in Iligan City. He started as an amateur boxer during the Golpe-Golpe Na Barangay of then Congressman Erbie A. Fabian. He turned professional when he joined the Navarro Boxing Stable. Arcillas is currently undergoing training at the Manny Pacquiao Gym in Davao City.

Navarro said that they opponents in the ring will come from Manila and Cebu.

The Golpe De Zamboagueño has also lined up five amateur boxing bouts, They are young and talented boxers who have mostly won in the Palarong Pambansa like Junny Bugas, Joshua Borleo, Arlou Saaverdra, Arvee Ferrer and Renieboy Ferraren.

The theme for these two combat sporting events is “Sports Contra Droga.”

Navarro said that he is promoting these sports events in time for the Fiesta Pilar Celebration and also as a tribute to his late father Rolando Navarro Sr. who was a staunch supporter of sports development in Zamboanga City especially boxing, basketball, and softball.

Navarro Sr. was instrumental in providing moral and logistical support to talented and promising local boxers who have now excelled in the national and international arena like SEA Gold Medalist Eumir Felix Marcial and many others.

“Ever since I was a kid, my father was very much involved not only in boxing but even with basketball and softball. He even financed the athletes to go to Davao or Manila for advanced training and practice, “ Navarro Jr. stressed. (Jemuel E. Mojica)
