Beng leads heroes’ welcome for SEA Games medalists Print

Mayor Beng Climaco Monday morning led City Government officials and employees in feting Zamboangueño athletes for their exceptional finish in the recently concluded 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia saying their victory gives the Filipinos hope and inspiration amid the challenges besetting the country.

“El de ustedes victorioso representacion na 29th SEA Games na Kuala Lumpur ta dale esperanza y inspiracion con el Ciudad de Zamboanga y entero Filipinas amediante el maga desafio que el ciudad y el nacion ta enfrenta,” Mayor Beng Climaco said as she  presented certificates of recognition to the athletes or to their representatives.

Honored were Eumir Felix Marcial who won a gold medal in the boxing event- middleweight (75 kg) category; Chezka Luy Centeno, gold medalist in the Women 9-pool ball single who was represented by her two sisters Chelsea and Charlotte; Chris Michael Tolomia, gold medalist in basketball as part of the Gilas Pilipinas team and represented by mother Victoria; Jefferson Rhey Loon, bronze medalist in the pencak silat (Tanding Class D category) and Ryan Jakiri, bronze medalist in the muaythai (63.5 kg) who was represented by his mother and coach.

The city is also preparing the vouchers for the grant of cash incentives to the athletes as mandated under a city ordinance. Marcial, Centeno and Tolomia will receive P150,000 each while Loon and Jakiri will get P75,000 each.

After the special welcome ceremony following the flag raising rites, the athletes were treated to a breakfast at the City Hall conference room and were later honored with a motorcade around the city’s main thoroughfares.

Marcial and Loon were also presented to members of the local media during the regular press briefing at City Hall.

Also honored Monday was Sharif Afif who woon a silver medal in the Senior Male Team Kumite and bronze medal in the Senior Individual Male Kumite 85kg category in the Thailand Karatedo Open Championship 2017 held in Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Also recognized were the coaches of the SEA Games medalists- Ambrocio Maquilan for  Eumir Felix Marcial  (boxing); Fausto Albert Centeno for Chezka Luy Centeno (billiard); Bobidick de los Santos and former Councilor Roel Natividad for Chris Michael S. Tolomia (basketball); Arnold Palpal-latoc for Ryan Jakiri  (muaythai) and Rommel Bernardo for Jefferson Rhey Loon (Pencak Silat).

Also present during the welcome ceremony were the members of the City Council, City Sports Division Chief Dr. Cecil Atilano and the parents and relatives of the athletes.

Other Zamboangueno athletes who joined the SEA GAMES were Sharief Afif – Karatedo; Nestor Colonia- weightlifting; Jay Harold Gregorio – muaythai and Mutmainna Asmad – Pencak Silat. (Sheila Covarrubias/Claudine Uniana/PR)
