The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) City Office on Tuesday reiterated to the barangay officials the need to make fully functional their respective Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council in support to the national government’s thrust against illegal drugs.

City DILG Chief Operation Officer, Jun Cillo said that the city’s 98 barangays, thru its BADAC, should be actively involved in the intensified campaign against the drug menace in the city.

“I enjoin all the Punong Barangays and the Kagawads to really help the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the fight against prohibited drugs. With the creation of the BADAC, the barangay officials can effectively address the problem of illegal drugs in their respective communities,” Cilllo stressed during his lecture on the Barangay Orientation on Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council Seminar held at the Department of Works and Highways Conference Room in Divisoria.

He added that the creation of BADAC greatly empowered the barangay officials in their effort to eradicate the drug problem in the barangay level.

The BADAC Orientation Seminar was organized by the Divisoria Police Station 5 under the newly-installed station chief, Police Superintendent Mark Azur, in coordination with PDEA Regional Office, Department of Health, Zamboanga City Medical Center, City Police Office and Liga ng Barangay and City DILG Office.

Barangay Chairpersons and kagawads of the barangays of Guiwan, Putik, Lunzuran, Divisoria, Lumbangan, Lumayang, Boalan and Zambowood actively participated in the said orientation seminar. The eight barangays are all under the area of responsibility (AOR) of the Police Station 5.

The DILG official also underscored the importance for all the barangay to really implement the plans and programs stipulated in their BADAC action plan which they submitted to the DILG and City Anti-Drug Abuse Council.

Under the BADAC Plan, the barangay officials are obliged to closely coordinate with the police and PDEA in the identification of suspected drug pushers and drug dependents in their community.

In addition, the barangay should also be ready to provide help like medical/psycological and livelihood assistance to drug dependents who voluntarily surrender to the barangay.

P/Supt. Azur challenged the barangay leaders to closely cooperate and coordinate with the police in the fight against illegal drugs.

“We enjoin the barangay officials through their respective BADAC to be our active partners in the fight against the drug menace. It is our common goal tha all our barangays will be declared drug free in the near future.” Supt. Azur stressed.

The police official added that the barangay leaders should not hesitate to report to the police any illicit drug activity happening in their community.

He added that getting rid of the drug problem should be the concern not only of the police and law enforcement authorities, but of each and every responsible citizen of the community. (Jemuel E. Mojica)
