The City Government of Zamboanga has already started the construction of the P25 million sanitary landfill cell two and the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in barangay Salaan inside the complex of the sanitary landfill.

Christopher Navarro, Officer-in-charge of the City Engineers Office said that the construction of the MRF and the cell two of the sanitary landfill will be done simultaneously.

These projects, funded by the city government, cost P16 million for the MRF and P9 million for the phase one excavation works of the cell two sanitary landfill project.

The projects started January 6, 2017 handled by NLL construction. The contractor have to finish the project within 360 calendar days.

Navarro said that when the MRF will be finished, segregation of waste will now be conducted in the area instead at the Lumbangan dumpsite.

A separate P40 million, also funded by the city government, will be used for the second phase of the cell two of the sanitary landfill that will include the installation of liners.

The second phase of the cell two already started last June 6, 2017 and is being handled by Bendimill Construction. The project is expected to finish in 127 days.

Cell two has an area of 16,599.62 square meters and 10 meters deep. This can accommodate one to two years amount of waste of the city.

According to Navarro, they are targeting to finish the projects by February or March 2018.

The entire sanitary landfill is 10.6 hectares and can house four cells and accommodate 10 to 15 years of the city’s wastes. (R.G. A A. Go)
