The Zamboanga City sports officer has revealed that the yearly Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg being conducted in Mindanao area is affected as the said sports event cannot push through due to the on-going Marawi siege.

Cecilia Atilano, Zamboanga City sports officer said in an interview that the original schedule of the competition was supposed to be on July 9. However, as early as May, the siege started in Marawi and competition was moved to September. But the fight is still ongoing which again led to the postponement of the said event.

“Kailangan makalaro yung mga bata or else magkakaproblema ang Philippine Sports Commission kasi walang selection masyadong marami yung atletang galing Mindanao so they need to conduct this Mindanao leg,” Atilano said.

Some of the sports which must pass the Mindanao leg are basketball, volleyball, and sepak takraw while those that does not need to pass the Mindanao leg are weightlifting, wrestling, and muay thai.

“Baka di ipadala ng mga parents yung mga anak nila kasi malapit sa giyera. We are hoping pati yung venue I change nila para maka pag participate tayo,” Atilano said.

She assured that the training of the athletes are ongoing whether they have a competition or not.

The Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg is scheduled on November in Oroquieta City where the sports event will be participated by athletes 15 years old and below coming from different schools in Mindanao.

Zamboanga City is planning to participate in 18 sports events with 120 athletes.

The athletes who will win during the Mindanao leg will qualify for the Batang Pinoy National leg to be conducted in February. (R.G. A A. Go)
