Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday cited the need for psychological intervention among couples or those in relationships, especially among teenagers in the wake of increasing suicide incidents in the city.

Climaco, once a school guidance counselor, noted the high frustration level of the recent suicide victims “and one of the causes was frustration due to failed relationships.”

“Perhaps our psychiatrists can review this because relationship really matters to us. It affects the mental and psychological framework of persons. Unfortunately, those with high frustration level succumbed to suicide,” the mayor said during the press briefing yesterday.

It has been observed that three or four suicide incidents were reported in the city last week, mostly unable to accept rejection in a relationship or frustration from something.

As this developed, City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos said series of psychological intervention activities like lectures and forums will be conducted in the barangays in line with the observance of National Suicide Prevention Week.

Agbulos said the country observes the second week of September as National Suicide Prevention Week each year as studies would show most suicide incidents occur during this time of the year.

The World Suicide Prevention Day is set Sept. 10 every year, he added.

He said the CHO will be coordinating with the Department of Health and psychiatrist association in the conduct of lectures and other activities in the barangays.-(Vic Larato/PR)
