Eight passengers landed in the hospital after the passenger utility jeepney they were riding rammed into an acacia tree in Putik-Lunzuran road yesterday morning.

The jeepney driver, Joel Toribio, said that the vehicle was carrying more or less 20 passengers, mostly students and adults, was going to the city proper when he noticed that the brake was malfunctioning.

Toribio said that his passenger jeep was travelling a descending portion of the road when he yelled to his conductor and passengers that the vehicle has developed brake problem.

Toribio pointed out that to elude hitting other vehicles, he decided to ram the jeepney into an acacia tree on the left side of the road.

Police said that among the eight passengers who were rushed to the hospital, only two of them sustained serious injuries while the six only suffered slight bruises.

Toribio pointed out that he has been driving the vehicle for more than a year now and it was his first time to experience such mechanical malfunction. – Dan Toribio
