Since all incumbent barangay officials in Zamboanga City would remain in office with the postponement of this year’s Barangay Election in Mindanao, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) city office on Tuesday underscored the need for the village officials to continue to do their utmost best in the performance of their duties and functions.

According to Jun Cillo, chief  for operation of the DILG city office, the postponement of the village polls should serve as challenge for the incumbent barangay officials to perform more and serve with dedication to their constituents.

“With the postponement of the Barangay and SK Election the present barangay officials shall continue to serve in hold over capacity and so it is incumbent upon them to do their best as far as barangay governance is concerned. Their constituents expect them to work hard for the benefit of the community,” Cillo told DZT in an interview.

The DILG official also urged the barangay official to regularly coordinate with their office for updated information, memos or directive coming from its central office and other the national government agencies.

Comelec last week decided to postpone the village and SK polls in the entire Mindanao region because of the imposition of Martial Law which will last until December 31 of this year. The poll body in its en banc resolution believed that the conditions necessary for a free and fair electoral exercise were not in Mindanao and so there is no option left but to postpone the election.

The poll body also made it clear that all incumbent barangay officials, unless removed or suspended for a cause, would remain in office further stressing in its resoltuion that “barangay (village) officials shall still continue to be the choice of the electorate.”

Meanwhile, there are moves in Congress to postpone the incoming Barangay and SK elections nationwide following fears that drug money might influence the results of the election.

In fact,  the House of Representatives has already approved on 3rd reading the postponement of Barangay and SK polls to May 2018.

However, the Senators want to postpone the said election to October 2018.(Jemuel E. Mojica)
