A government employee of Payao Municipality in Zamboanga Sibugay was shot and seriously wounded by a security escort of the municipal mayor last Saturday before noon.

The victim was identified as Rodrigo Jalique, married. He sustained a bullet wound in the left portion of the chest and was taken to the hospital.

Jalique was shot by Danny Bayhonan, a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) and detailed as a security escort of Mayor Joeper Hamlag Mendoza.

Police investigation showed that Jalique was under the influence of liquor when he figured in a heated argument with his son, Ronnel.

Amid their argument, Rodrigo took his gun from the cabinet and fired it upward.

Still not contented, he went outside of his house and fired again his gun twice.

Incidentally, Bayhonan was at the vicinity serving as duty security escort to the mayor so he warned Jalique to stop from indiscriminate firing but accordingly the latter got angry and pointed his gun towards the former.

At this point, the victim even fired one shot to Jalique so the latter simply responded by returning using his M16 rifle hitting the victim on the left portion of his chest.

Bayhonan immediately reported the incident to his detachment commander while the wounded victim was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

Investigators recovered a caliber 9mm Trooper pistol with two live ammunitions inside the magazine, one spent shell of 9mm caliber and one spent shell of M16 rifle which were brought to Payao municipal police station for further investigation.—(Dan Toribio)
