The Highway Patrol Group-9 Zamboanga del Norte provincial team has recovered last week two Mitsubishi Montero which were earlier reportedly carnapped in Metro Manila during their intensified anti-carnapping operations in the province.

HPG-9 provincial team led by Senior Inspector Romeo B. Orcullo Jr. disclosed that the two Mitsubishi Montero; one color  silver with plate number UBO 618 and a 2012 model, and the other unit as color black with plate number XME 161 and also a 2012 model.

Orcullo explained that during their random inspection, Lito Pacobo who was driving the Montero color silver failed only presented an expired registration. They found out that the owner of the Montero is  from Parañaque City. When the HPG-9 operatives checked it with the Vehicle Information Management System and Land Transportation Office (LTO) website it appears that there is no existing records and its plate number also belongs to another registered vehicle.

The other Montero color black was recovered by the police in an abandoned  portion of the road of barangay San Pedro  in Dapitan City. The luxury car has faked plate number. Upon further verification, the police found out that it is owned by a certain Haifa Asis of Dasmariñas City.

The two units of Montero are now impounded at HPG-9 Zamboanga Del Norte Ofice in barangay Turno while the police are still conducting further investigation to ascertain the legitimate owners of the vehicles.

It can be noted that for the past several years most of the carnapped vehicles in Metro Manila are being brought to Mindanao where there are available and willing buyers for these “hot cars”.-- Allen Abastillas
