The rubber industry in Basilan will soon receive a big boost. The label " dirty rubber of Basilan" will possibly be erased and replaced with the "world's best Basilan rubber".

Governor Jim Hataman Salliman submitted a proposal through his Technical Working Team for the establishment of a Crumb Rubber Processing and Marketing Enterprise to the Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP) under the Department of Agriculture.

The establishment of Crumb Rubber Processing and Marketing Enterprise , as conceptualized by the governor, will be an economic enterprise insulated from political influences. Under the proposal it will be administered by an independent multi-sectoral board to be known as the Basilan Rubber Development Advisory Board (BaRDAB) which is mandated to appoint a business manager and hire its employees.

The business manager will administer the day to day operation of the project. He shall directly market the crumb rubber to private businesses engaged in buying rubber and potential market linkage abroad.

The proposed total cost of the project amounts to 50.5M inclusive of the provincial government's 20% share in the cost, working capital and capital in kind. While the 80% of the project cost shall be sourced out from loan proceeds of the national government thru the Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP).

The Rubber Processing and Marketing Enterprise will benefit 80% of small and medium rubber farmers in the province. Since it is designed as an economic enterprise, 30% of the net profit shall return to the farmers in the form of support services and 20% of which shall be for Patronage Refund.

Governor Salliman vows to upgrade the rubber industry in the province. Long before , Basilan was seen as the home of world's known multinational companies producing rubber for tire production. With the advocacy of the Governor Salliman, Basilan is on the right track to regain its past glory as producer of globally competitive crumb rubber. (PIO-Basilan)
