The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office 9 has disclosed that there are 535 indigent senior citizens beneficiaries of the DSWD Social Pension who did not yet claim their pension from January to present.

Maria Gloria Patayan, DSWD 9 social pension focal person, said in an interview that these 535 senior citizens came from the different barangays in Zamboanga City.

According to Patayan, the possible reasons why these senior citizens falied to get their pension are either they are sick or have transferred to another place. She added that other cannot be located by the office.

She said that social workers are currently tracking these senior citizens so that their benefits can be given to them. These pensioners must be tracked so that proper liquidation of money can be done, so that the pensioner will not be delisted, and the funding will not go back to the national treasury.

She is also advising that if these pensioners will transfer or go on vacation they must inform the DSWD or the Office of the Senior Citizen’s Affair near them.

“Make sure to get your pension so you can enjoy your benefits if not the money will be returned to the national treasury,” Patayan said.

In the social pension program, a senior citizen receives P1,500 per quarter where the senior citizen or his or her authorized representative claim the money thru their local government units. The money is expected to be used to care for the senior citizen which includes food and medications.

To qualify for the program the senior citizen must be: Indigent; 60 years old and above; and mus not be a pensioner of the Social Security System or the Government Service Insurance System.

At present, DSWD-9 has 151,988 beneficiaries under the DSWD’s Social Pension Program where 14,765 are from Zamboanga City. The fund for the program is P911 million for the entire region 9 where P88 million are allocated for Zamboanga City. (R.G. A A. Go)
