Municipal councilor of Jolo kidnapped by armed men with links to Abu Sayyaf Print

Gunmen believed to be members of the Ajang-Ajang kidnap-for-ransom-group and reportedly with ties to the Abu Sayyaf  extremist group seized Councilor Ezzeddin Suod Tan, incumbent member of the Municipality of Jolo, last Wednesday night.

Tan with some companions were riding bicycles passing the border of barangays Timbangan and Tagbak in the Municipality of  Indanan, Sulu past 6 p.m. when a group of heavily armed men onboard a Tamaraw vehicle blocked their way.

Some of the armed men alighted from the vehicle and forcibly dragged Tan to their Tamaraw jeep and then immediately sped towards the nearby Municipality of Talipao, a known lair of the extremist group.

The incident was reported to the police and the military units in the province for immediate follow-up operations.

Acting on the report, troops of the Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion conducted checkpoints in the municipalities of Jolo, Talipao, Maimbung for the possible interception of the suspects and rescue of the victim.

Meanwhile, Joint Task Force Sulu commander Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said that search and rescue operations are ongoing as of press time for the recovery of Tan.

As of press time yesterday, no other details were made available to the reporters by the police and the military officials in the proivince.. – Dan Toribio
