Mindanao Basketball League kicks-off today Print

All roads lead today to Golden Boys Gymnasium for the opening of the first Mindanao Basketball League (MBL) Fiesta Pilar Cup where eight teams from different cities and provinces will see action in the hard court.

Local fans are expected to troop to the opening ceremonies this afternoon as former professional players playing in national arena will play as import for the competing teams.

The General Santos Kings will be bannered by former PBA 7-footer EJ Feihl, former Kia player Rene Pacquiao and Louie Medalla; while Roxas Zanorte of Mayor Jan Vallacer will be headed by ex-Rain or Shine guard Hercules Tangkay.

Other participating teams are the Pagadian Explorers of Rene Pamaran, Ayala, Sindangan of Mayor Insik Sy, ZC Omars, Zamboanga Mudz and Basilan BRT of Vice Mayor Julz Hataman.

Former University of the East star Gino Jumaoas and ex-Letran bruiser Jonathan Belorio will play for ZC Omars; while former Kia guard Jonathan Pareno will be the import for Zamboanga Mudz.

“We fully well know that Zamboagueños really love the sports of basketball. A big league like this will be greatly appreciated by the fans not only coming from Zamboanga City but even also those from the neighboring cities and provinces,” Junnie Navarro, tournament organizer, told DZT in an interview.

Navarro said that former professional players coming from Manila will also be playing as imports for the teams of their choice.

He said that only one import per team is allowed.

This league aims to promote sports particularly basketball to the youth.

The basketball tourney is supported by HELL Energy Drink, RF Mariano, OSHIS Restaurant, EMedia, LM Metro Hotel, Rhamifm, ZC Kings Manpower, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Lilia Nuno, and councilors Lilibeth Nuno, Boday Cabato, Teody Arquiza and Pinpin Pareja.--(Jemuel E. Mojica)
