Zambo sizzles with Fiesta activities Print

It was a sizzling start for the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2017 Sunday with 2 back to back activities setting the stage for the month-long celebration in honor of Nuestra Senora de la Virgen del Pilar.

Celebrity performer Daryl Ong of the Voice of the Philippines, Season 2 brought the house down with his performance during the opening salvo at the City Coliseum in Tetuan. Adding color and fun to the numerous performances and presentations were the Inter-Barangay Bandoreal competition and the Pink October Walk which formed part of the Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Mayor Beng Climaco, who spearheaded the opening salvo, invited all people from far and wide to come to Zamboanga to join in the celebration and pay homage to the Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar.

She said diverse activities have been lined up leading to October 12, the feast day of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s patron saint.

The opening salvo capped with the announcement of winners in the bandoreal competition as well as arco competition, which was participated by 8 barangays.

Meanwhile, the Smoke out Zamboanga- Grilled Food fiesta and Zamboanga Grand Midnight Sale formally opened Saturday, Sept. 30 and will run until October 11 from 4pm to 11pm at the R.T. Lim Boulevard. A total of 23 stalls selling freshly grilled foods and mouthwatering cuisines and 40 business stalls offering a wide-array of products line up the entire stretch of the boulevard with live band music and other performances.

Other City government-initiated activities during the festival are Cosechas de Zamboanga at Plaza Pershing from Oct. 3-27; Zamboanga Art Exhibit at the City Mall in Tetuan from Oct. 2-9; Pet Parade and blessing at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca at 8am on Oct. 4; Dance Sport competition at the City Coliseum at 1pm on Oct. 6; Zampex 2017 (organized by DTI) at the Madrid Hall, Palacio del Sur from Oct. 6-10; Cheerleading competition at the City Coliseum at 1pm on Oct. 7; Original Chavacano video music festival at Centro Latino at 7pm on Oct. 7; Regatta de Zamboanga at 7am at the R.T. Lim Boulevard on Oct. 8; Wow Sardinas grand boodle fight at 11am at R.T. Lim Boulevard on Oct. 8; Mascota competition at 7pm at the Paseo del Mar open stage on Oct. 8; Parade of Lights (float competition) at 6pm from Nunez extension to City Hall on Oct. 10; Balik Zamboanga Night at 7pm at the Rigodon Palmeras on Oct. 10 and Street Dance competition and fiesta main program at 1pm from the fire station to Paseo del Mar on Oct. 11.

October 12, the feast day of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar will be devoted to religious activities at the Fort Pilar Shrine in Rio Hondo. The novena masses will be held at 5pm at the Fort Pilar Shrine from Oct. 3 to 11.

Other activities after the fiesta will be Danza La Vida (Street party) on Oct. 12 and the National Youth Day 2017 from Nov. 6-10.

Private groups and organizations have also organized various activities and are included in the calendar of Zambo Hermosa activities. (Sheila Covarrubias)
