Zamboanga Peninsula registers heavy influx of tourists for 2017 PDF Print E-mail

The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office 9 had registered 500,000 tourist arrivals in Zamboanga Peninsula or region 9 just from January up to the present brought about frequent promotional fares airline companies, positive tourist destinations being shown by the social media and also improved peace and order situation.

Marilou Silorio, DOT 9 chief tourism operation officer, disclosed that most of the tourist coming to Zamboanga City and other parts of the region are Americans, Chinese, Canadian, Indians, and Australians.

“These are the foreign tourists who comprise are top visitors of the region. However, we also have a considerable increase in the number of balikbayan’s and other local tourists visiting the region, “ Silorio bared during a press conference at their office yesterday.

Meanwhile, the top destinations of tourists in region 9 are Zamboanga City, Dipolog City, and Dapitan City. Tourists are here to visit the place while others are in the region for business purposes.

“Local and domestic tourist would like to Sta. Cruz Island, Fort Pilar Shrine,  Dakak Park and Beach Resort, Rizal Shrine in Dapitan, and other eco-tourism destinations in region 9,” she added.

The tourism official also stressed that the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival will also help in the influx of tourist in the city and the region.

She said that these figures will still be increasing before the year ends when all of the reports on tourist arrival will come in.

For 2016, there were 653,812 domestic visitors, 12,001 foreign visitors, and 13,267 balikbayans. These balikbayans are Philippine Passport holders residing in abroad.

In 2016 top visitors includes Americans, Chinese, Malaysian, visitors from Saudi Arabia, and Canadians.

“In terms of products we have so much to offer I hope they will come and experience that it’s more fun in Zamboanga Peninsula, come experience our food, people, culture, as we have much to offer. In fact, in terms of products we have better products compared to other destination and the places are very proximate to each other.” Silorio said. (R.G. A A. Go)
