Operatives of the Tetuan Police Station and soldiers of Task Force Zamboanga (TFZ) intercepted a cargo truck loaded with smuggled rice along the boundary of Barangay Arena Blanco and Barangay Mampang last Tuesday night.

The Tetuan Police Station disclosed that their operatives were conducting a mobile patrol around 10 p.m. when they spotted a truck loaded with 280 sacks of Jasmine rice.

The report said that the sacks of rice came from Vietnam and allegedly smuggled into the country. However, the police have yet to name the truck driver as it was not mentioned in their official report.

The truck transporting the alleged smuggled rice was brought to the Tetuan Police Station pending the turn-over of the smuggled rice to the District Office of Bureau of Custom for proper disposition.

It can be noted that for the past several years now the City Police Office and the Task Force Zamboanga in coordination with Bureau of Customs have intensified the campaign against smuggling particularly on rice and sugar smuggling here in the city.

Police and military authorities said that smugglers are using several private mini-wharfs as entry points for smuggled goods coming from Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Officials said that smuggled goods such as rice, sugar and cooking oil are far more affordable compared to local goods. —Dan Toribio
