Former senator and now Taguig Congresswoman (2nd District) Pilar “Pia” Juliana Cayetano, one of the city’s invited guests for its culmination program of the HermosaFestival, has strongly urged Zamboangueños to preserve the  Chavacano dialect as this broken-Spanish dialect surely promotes the cultural heritage of Zamboanga City.

The congresswoman stressed that she always find the Chavacno dialect very interesting since it is derived from the Spanish Language.

“I strongly encourage the Zamboangueños to keep Chavacano alive at the same time promote your culture and heritage,” Cayetano emphasized to reporters during an interview.

Cayetano added that the Chavacano is a unique dialect and it is very important that residents of Zamboanga City should preserve and promote it.

According to Cayetano, Philippines is the only country in Asia that has a Spanish heritage and speaks a Spanish dialect.

The Chavacano dialect is also being used as the local vernacular in Lamitan City and Isabela City and other parts of Basilan.

The former senator during her visit to the city joined the parade of lights by riding her bike together with Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar which added attraction to the activity.

Meanwhile, Cayetano also emphasized  Zamboanga’s potential in tourism especially when it comes to eco-tourism to include biking and hiking.

However, she also said that peace and order situation must be stable to attract more visitors to come to Zamboanga.  (R.G. A A. Go)
