Authorities searching for high-powered firearms found a fragmentation grenade in the house of the mayor of Palimbang town in Sultan Kudarat province Friday.

The target of the operation, Mayor Abubacar Pendatun Maulana, and his bodyguards managed to escape just as personnel of the Police Regional Office-12 began surrounding his house to search for firearms.

Chief Inspector Aldrin Gonzales, spokesman of PRO-12, said the raiding team, led by Senior Superintendent Raul Supiter of the Sultan Kudarat provincial police, raided the house of Maulana in Barangay Kulong-Kulong in Palimbang based on a warrant from a court.

Gonzales said Maulana shall be prosecuted for illegal possession of an explosive.

The operation that resulted in the recovery of a fragmentation grenade in the house of Maulana was carried out with the help of his neighbors who reported to the police his alleged possession of assault rifles and pistols.

Gonzales said another team also found an M-79 grenade launcher, an M-14 rifle and an M-16 rifle from the house of Abdulmaguid Kamid Usman, a neighbor of Maulana.

Usman eluded arrest, apparently alerted by lookouts as policemen approached his house from two directions.

The raiding team arrested a villager, Redin Salipin, who tried to run away when he noticed policemen barged into the house of Usman from his yard nearby.

The policemen who cornered him found a .45 caliber pistol tucked in his waist. (John Felix M. Unson)
